President Donald Trump signed a landmark animal cruelty bill into law which makes some acts of animal cruelty into a federal crime that is punishable by up to seven years in prison.

One of the types of crimes that are the so-called “crush” videos that show a small animal being killed by stomping on it, which was already part of a 2010 law that aimed at unusual sexual fetishes that derived pleasure through animal torture.
This law expands on the definition by including animals that are “purposely crushed, burned, drowned, suffocated, impaled or otherwise subjected to serious bodily injury.”
However, the law clarifies exemptions for slaughtering livestock, hunting, trapping, fishing, and medical or scientific research and includes “customary normal veterinary, agriculture husbandry, or other animal management practices,” as well as pest control.
In addition, anything that is “necessary to protect the life or property of a person” or done as part of euthanizing an animal is also exempt.
