El Paso sees 16,000 illegal migrants at border in 48 hours

A surge at the United States’ southern border in El Paso.

According to a senior US Border Patrol official, over 2400 migrants crossed into the US near El Paso, Texas, daily over the weekend, “with a 3-day average of 2,460 daily encounters, primarily through the downtown area of El Paso, acting chief patrol agent Peter Jaquez of the El Paso sector said in a tweet, CNN reported.

Besides somewhere in the neighborhood of 7,500 illegal immigrants making their way into the United States, border patrol agents encountered more than 16,000 migrants at the southern border overall, the Daily Mail reported.

End of Title 42 leading migrant surge that’s estimated to get much worse

Title 42 is a public health law that was invoked by the Trump administration during the pandemic allowing the Department of Homeland Security to expel migrants back to Mexico or their home countries without letting them seek assignment, according to advocacy group the American Immigration Counsel.

In November, a federal judge vacated and ended Title 42 and gave the Biden administration until December 21 to stop the expulsions, the El Paso Times reported.

Todd Bensman, a Senior National Security Fellow for the Center for Immigration Studies, wrote an opinion piece for the Daily Mail warning that the end of title 42 will make it easier to get into the US and says illegal border crossings are about to “get catastrophically worse.

Bensman says last year saw a record-breaking 4.4 million illegal crossings in 2022, with another estimated 1.5 million “got-aways” that slipped into the country undetected.

“This failed asylum system hamstrings deportation and mainlines illegal immigrants straight into America, pretty much forever,” Bensman wrote. “Don’t take my word for it. Former Obama DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson recently told Face the Nation. ‘It takes six years right now to process an asylum claim once someone has entered this country.'”

Johnson went on to say that 70 percent of migrants seeking asylum are allowed into America, but only 20 percent are eventually granted asylum, and there are six years in between.

Boebert wins re-election in recount

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) has won her bid for re-election against Democrat Adam Frisch, an automatic recount confirmed Monday. Boebert won by just 546 votes, Fox reported.

Biden nuclear official fired after multiple luggage theft charges, facing up to 10 years in prison

Sam Brinton, a top nuclear waste official with the Biden administration, who identifies as non-binary, has been fired following a string of luggage thefts from airports, according to reports, the New York Post reported.

“Sam Brinton is no longer a DOE employee,” a spokesperson for the DOE told the Daily Beast on Monday. “By law, the Department of Energy cannot comment further on personnel matters.”

Brinton, 35, was the deputy assistant secretary for spent fuel and waste disposition at the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy.

On July 6, Brinton, wearing a distinctive atomic symbol T-shirt, was captured on security footage making off with a woman’s bag worth more than $3,670 from a Las Vegas airport, KLAS reported.

Last month, Brinton was charged in the September theft of a woman’s suitcase from a Minneapolis airport.

Brinton faces up to five years in prison for the Minnesota theft and up to 10 years for the Las Vegas heist. According to an Energy Department spokesperson, Brinton was placed on leave when the first allegation came to light.
